In this week's #EmployeeVoices, you'll get to meet Ariel Schäffer - our Head of Operations for Germany! 🇩🇪 She's a force to be reckoned with, constantly on the lookout for improvements in terms of all things operations related and is certainly wearing many hats at the same time. Tell us more about what you do as the Head of Operations for Germany?
Sure thing! I was actually just promoted internally from Senior Operations Manager to my current role as the Head of Operations in Germany. What I focus on is improving how we deliver on our target outputs through data-driven optimisation, strategic projects and project management together with cross-functional teams across Voi. As you can imagine, there are a lot of different topics that touch all points of our Operations Business so not a single day for me looks the same, really.
What inspired you to pursue a career in your field?
My road to Voi was a bit non-traditional. I worked in the US within the Retail and Grocery Industry beforehand and then moved abroad to pursue a new career and further my studies. After completing my MBA and an internship in Germany working on a Self-driving vehicle project, I knew I wanted to continue within the New Mobility Industry. At this very time, Germany legalised E-scooters. I watched an interview from our CEO, Fredrik Hjelm, and was inspired by his big ambitions (true story!) and so I applied and the rest is history!
What makes Voi stand out over other companies, for you?
Apart from loving the culture at Voi, I also have autonomy to help shape my own team’s goals and deliverables. If you make a mistake, it’s a learning experience rather than a blame-game and no matter the department, in my experience people are ready and willing to help out if I have a question or a new idea. Plus, I get to ride a lot of Voi! 😀
What has been the most rewarding aspect of your work so far?
When I began my Voiage, we were operating in four markets in Germany - we are now in a total of 23 in Germany alone! During this growth period, I did everything from driving through cities looking for lost scooters to creating and implementing operational strategies for the team. I'd say that the most rewarding aspect must be the impact I feel that I've had on the business!
What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
Never be afraid to advocate for yourself or be vocal about your accomplishments. You are your #1 cheerleader! 📣
If Voi would be a movie, which one would it be, and why?
The 1994 classic, Speed, starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. External factors in this industry are constantly shifting and evolving, but with our Ride Together mentality, we adapt quickly and push forward. While it is sometimes hectic, it is always rewarding and entertaining.
